About Ian Pollock

Ian Pollock is a multidisciplinary educator, artist, and researcher working at the intersection of new media art, interaction design, and social justice. He is an Associate Professor of Art and Director of the Graduate Program in Interaction Design and Interactive Art at Â鶹Éç. With over two decades of experience in academia and professional practice, Pollock holds a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in New Media Art Practice from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute.

 

Creative Practice and Research

Pollock's creative practice explores the intersections of technology, urban transformation, and activism. His project, Guerrilla Grafters, reimagines urban spaces by grafting fruit-bearing branches onto ornamental city trees, addressing sustainability and food access. This initiative has been featured in major exhibitions, including the Venice International Biennale for Architecture, and highlighted in numerous media outlets.

In addition to Guerrilla Grafters, Pollock's projects include BiasMap, which visualizes global prejudices and biases through spatial data, and various interactive installations that challenge societal norms and promote dialogue on pressing social issues.

 

Sustainability in Computer Science Education

As a principal investigator, Pollock has led several innovative education research projects, including the BRAIN JAM After-School Pilot Program, which integrates neuroscience education with game-making for underserved high school students in Hayward, CA. His research interests focus on developing interdisciplinary learning models that foster collaboration and creativity.

Pollock has organized and participated in numerous game jams, hackathons, and international study trips, furthering his commitment to experiential learning and cross-cultural exchange.

Ian Pollock's scholarly contributions include articles in journals such as ACM Digital Library, Afterimage, and Leonardo Journal. His work has been featured in anthologies and various media outlets, underscoring his impact on contemporary art and activism. He has received multiple grants and awards, including the Eisner Prize for Excellence in the Arts and the Wells Fargo Foundation Grant, reflecting his contributions to art and education.

Beyond his academic and artistic pursuits, Pollock actively engages in community-building initiatives. He believes in the power of art to inspire change and advocates for accessible education and resources, particularly for underserved communities.
